Our 84-day journey started in Chicago, followed the Mississippi River and the Tennessee-Tombigbee waterway down to the Gulf of Mexico, across Florida, up the Atlantic seaboard, through the rivers of Canada, and back to Lake Michigan where our adventure first began.
With a camping tent, a little bit of money and a summer to burn, we set out on the adventure of a lifetime. Our prior boating experience was limited to calm inland freshwater, but our confidence was strong as we encountered wild currents, stormy weather and scorching temperatures.
Why?
We grew up on the shores of Lake Sammamish, in Issaquah Washington, where we fell in love with boating. After high school we both left home to attend college at different small liberal arts schools in the Midwest. With busy schedules and “real-life” on the horizon, we realized how precious our summers on the lake had been. At the time, it was frightening to imagine that this important part of our upbringing might soon get pushed aside for more adult responsibilities.
